Your bag is empty.
You might be the person everyone thinks is managing.
You get up. You go to work. You look after people. You keep things moving. You might even be the one others rely on.
But underneath, it feels different.
You may feel anxious, flat, disconnected, easily overwhelmed, emotionally numb, angry, stuck, ashamed, or like you’re always waiting for something to go wrong.
Maybe you’ve been through things that changed you. Abuse, neglect, loss, bullying, unsafe relationships, family difficulties, assault, or years of having to cope alone.
Maybe you wouldn’t call it trauma.
Maybe part of you thinks, “Other people had it worse.”
But something in you knows you are not really okay.
At ThriveMind Therapy, I offer trauma-informed psychological therapy in Mansfield for adults who are functioning on the outside but struggling underneath.
This is therapy for people who have learned to survive, push through and keep going, but now want to understand themselves properly and feel more like themselves again.
A lot of the things people judge themselves for once made sense.
Overthinking may have helped you feel prepared.
People-pleasing may have helped you stay safe.
Shutting down may have helped you get through things that felt too much.
Being independent may have protected you from needing people who were not reliable.
Feeling numb may have helped you survive pain you could not fully process at the time.
Therapy is not about blaming you for how you cope.
It is about understanding why those patterns developed, how they helped you survive, and why they might now be keeping you stuck.
You often feel like you are “too much” or “not enough”.
You struggle with anxiety, low mood, shame, emotional numbness, or feeling disconnected from yourself.
You keep functioning, but life does not feel meaningful or settled.
You find relationships hard, even when you really want closeness.
You feel responsible for everyone else’s feelings.
You struggle to know what you need, want, or feel.
You have a harsh inner critic.
You feel guilty resting or choosing yourself.
You keep repeating patterns and cannot fully understand why.
You want therapy that looks at the deeper roots, not just surface-level coping tips.
Therapy gives you space to slow things down and make sense of what has been happening inside you.
Together, we can explore:
Why certain emotions feel so intense.
Why you shut down, overthink, avoid, people-please, or feel on edge.
How past experiences shaped your view of yourself, others and the world.
What your anxiety or low mood might be trying to protect you from.
How to feel safer in your body and emotions.
How to build healthier boundaries and relationships.
How to stop living in survival mode and begin moving towards a life that feels more like yours.
We will go at a pace that feels manageable. You do not have to tell me everything straight away. You do not have to perform, impress, or explain yourself perfectly.
You can come as you are.
I am Sara Matthews, an HCPC registered psychologist offering therapy in Mansfield and online.
My approach is warm, thoughtful and down-to-earth. I work integratively, which means therapy is shaped around you rather than forcing you into one rigid model.
The work may include elements of trauma-informed therapy, formulation, compassion-focused approaches, nervous system understanding, emotional regulation, values-based work and practical tools you can use between sessions.
But more than anything, we will work together to understand you as a whole person.
Not just symptoms.
Not just a diagnosis.
Not just what is “wrong”.
The question I am most interested in is:
“What happened, what sense did you make of it, and what did you have to do to survive?”
Starting therapy can feel exposing. Especially if you are used to holding everything together.
You might worry that your problems are not serious enough, or that you will not know what to say.
That is completely normal.
The first session is not about diving into the deepest parts of your life before you are ready. It is a gentle starting point. We will talk about what has brought you here, what you would like to be different, and what support might be most helpful.
You can ask questions. You can take your time. You are allowed to be unsure.
I offer 60-minute therapy sessions for adults in Mansfield and across the UK online.
Sessions can support difficulties including:
Trauma and the impact of difficult experiences
Anxiety and overthinking
Low mood and depression
Emotional numbness or disconnection
Shame and low self-worth
Relationship patterns
People-pleasing and boundaries
Feeling stuck, lost or not like yourself
If this sounds familiar, you do not have to wait until things get worse to ask for support.
You can book a first session or send an enquiry using the form at the bottom of this page.
There is no pressure to have the perfect words.
You can simply say:
“I think this sounds like me and I’d like to talk about therapy.”
